A brief history of St Paul's Players

St Paul's Players is a lively, welcoming and friendly amateur company, based at St Paul's Church in Southville. We can trace our roots back as far as 1946, to a youth group attached to the church, but the company as it exists today was formally founded November 16th 1954. Our first production was a one-act play, “Penny Plain” and it was closely followed by our first three-act play in October 1955 – “Sister Craven” by Stuart Ready.

Throughout the early years, until 1999, the group's main home was St David's Hall on Beauley Road, which was converted in 1961 to accommodate dressing-rooms, a proscenium arch and stage lighting. This theatre saw many successful productions and also saw the group touring as far afield as the Minack Theatre in Cornwall – a hard, but tantalising act for us to follow today!

The company relocated in 1999 to St Paul's Church, which has remained our base for rehearsals ever since. We also transform the church on a regular basis – so far it's been woodlands, riversides, sitting rooms, Victorian London and many other locations besides. We could not do this without the support of the Parish and Brightsparks, a lighting company also based at the Church. The Church also houses a substantial wardrobe, props and scenery store.

Since 1999, we have also performed in a wide range of theatres in and around Bristol. Backwell Playhouse, Long Ashton Community Centre and the Brewery Theatre (part of the well-regarded Tobacco Factory Theatre) have all hosted us, and we will shortly be staging productions at the Olympus Theatre, Filton College and the Alma Tavern in Clifton.

In recent years we have also won a number of awards in One Act Festivals, including Best Actor and Actress awards, and nominations for best stage setting, special effects and for individual performances.
